TransPonder Book Club cultivates a welcoming atmosphere, providing a space for transgender individuals and allies of all ages to discuss literature and share personal stories.

Nov. 20 is Transgender Day of Remembrance, an annual event honoring of the memory of transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.

Since 2013,TransPonder has been a non-profit organization providing services to the trans and gender-expansive community of Eugene. These services include mental health, vocal training and medical needs on top of helping coordinate gathering spaces like Trans Day of Remembrance locally in Eugene.

In 2012, some transgender and queer folks local to Eugene gathered in a backyard, seeking a support group for their identities. In the comfort of each other’s presence — knowing this was a safe space to be whoever you are — they shared stories and experiences, provided validation and grew a community for people constantly marginalized and oppressed by our society.

TransPonder is a Eugene-area trans-led nonprofit that coordinates and provides support for Lane County’s trans and nonbinary community. It holds a number of meetings for trans community-building and support, curates lists of gender-affirming medical, mental health and faith-based resources and consults with outside groups about fostering gender-inclusive spaces.

A transgender organization in Eugene is looking to improve its outreach, operations, and partnerships, with a $30,000 grant.

It’s Pride month, with many LGBTQ people hoping for more acceptance and support. That includes Eugene’s transgender community.

Two members of the Eugene group TransPonder held a virtual listening session this week on police reform. But they are cautiously optimistic about the ability to see real change.

TransPonder, a nonprofit organization serving transgender residents, sent out a survey early in the pandemic to identify its clients’ most significant needs. “The biggest things that people were seeking were mental health support and community connection,” says TransPonder’s Oblio Stroyman. “We expected it to be more about housing and stuff, but actually what people are looking for is connection and having places to process with people who understand them.”
